The Junior League of Ann Arbor is thrilled to host the 5th Annual Women in Leadership event! Join us on October 12, 2017, 6:00 - 9:00pm for an evening of shopping local vendors at our holiday market , 50/50 raffle, and networking with women who lead in the greater Ann Arbor area. Light hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. 

The event will feature a keynote address, followed by a panel of local leaders who will share tips, strategies, and personal anecdotes about how to grow and thrive as leaders in our careers and communities. 

Proceeds from this event will help support JLAA community programs. 

Keynote address by: 

Jan Garfinkle, Founder & Managing Director, Arboretum Ventures 

Jan Garfinkle founded Arboretum Ventures in 2002 and is a Managing Director. Jan leads the fund-raising effort at Arboretum and has raised over $450 million over four funds. At Arboretum, Jan’s investments focus on promising medical technologies that enable meaningful healthcare system savings. Jan has led more than a dozen investments and currently serves on the Board of Directors for NxThera, Ebb Therapeutics, NeuMoDx, Cardiac Dimensions and Strata Oncology. Jan’s past investments have led to successful exits creating over $2 billion in enterprise value. These include HandyLab (acquired by Becton Dickinson in 2009), Esperion (IPO in 2013), and CardioMEMS (acquired by St. Jude Medical in 2014).

Prior to founding Arboretum, Jan spent 20 years in entrepreneurial healthcare companies. She was Founder and President of Strategic Marketing Consultants, advising healthcare start-ups and major medical device companies. Prior to this, Jan held key management roles for two successful medical device start-ups, Advanced Cardiovascular Systems and Devices for Vascular Intervention. Each of these companies was acquired by Eli Lilly for more than $100 million and became the foundation for Guidant Corporation. Earlier in her career, Jan was an engineer and product manager for Procter & Gamble.

Jan is a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA), and on the Board of Directors of the St. Joseph Mercy Regional Health System. Jan has been recognized as the 2015 Crain’s Newsmaker of the Year, and in 2016 as one of Crain’s Most Influential Women. Jan earned a BS in Bioengineering from the University of California at Berkeley and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Alexandra Clark, Owner, Bon Bon Bon

Alexandra Clark’s joy for confectionary started at an early age and was solidified during her studies at Michigan State University’s The School of Hospitality Business.

With a series of impressive professional stints including The Detroit Athletic Club and Max Brenner in Boston under her belt, she embarked on her most incredible venture to date, opening Bon Bon Bon in 2013 in her hometown of Detroit.

Known for mixing classic French technique with a bit of whimsy, Bon Bon Bon creates delightful chocolates flavors full of surprise and bursting with flavor. In early 2016, Clark was named one of Forbes magazine's "30 under 30," in the Food & Drink category, signaling her spot as a leader in the confectionary world.

Jen House, Owner, Jen House Design & A Moment In Time Wedding + Event Production

Jennifer House is a Bridal Consultant, Event Planner and Floral Designer. She is the co-owner of Jen House Design along with her business partner, Kendall Goddard. Additionally, Jen is the owner of A Moment in Time Wedding & Event Production, a highly rated and sought after event planning firm. Jen, began her career as a wedding planner in 2006 and soon after took up the task of designing floral for her wedding clients. After several years of planning and designing hundreds of events, Jen still loves each event as much as the first. Jen believes in “getting the job done with a smile!” and creating an experience her clients won’t soon forget.

Jen’s designs have been featured in magazines such as Brides Magazine/Michigan, Ambassador Magazine, The Knot Magazine/Michigan and many more print publications. Additionally, Jen has also been featured in party planning segments on WDIV Channel 7 News and Fox 2 News in Detroit. Also, Jen was a speaker for the Good Morning America, Women For Hire (Spark and Hustle) Tour, 2012 and featured as an event planner and designer on MTV’s “Young and Married” reality series. Jennifer was formerly in the counseling field and worked at various non-profits in metro Detroit. Jen House Design serves all of Southeast Michigan and Northern Michigan for their event & floral design needs.

Kaelyn Glasgow, Manager, New Business Sales, Google

Kaelyn has over 6 years of experience in brand development and digital marketing, and currently serves as a New Business Sales Manager at Google.  Her focus at Google is empowering and leading her team to be successful by making their customers successful.

Kaelyn holds a BS in Business Administration, Finance and Accounting, from Northeastern University in Boston.  Prior to Google, she was living in New York City spending her days in currency sales and trading at JPMorgan. She likes to spend her "spare" time outdoors with her son Jack, husband Paul, and crazy black labs, Dexter and Bella.

Laurie Solotorow, Senior Program Officer, The Michigan Health Endowment Fund

Laurie Solotorow is a Senior Program Officer for the Michigan Health Endowment Fund. She oversees the Health Fund’s Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles Proactive grant program, as well as work specific to early childhood intervention and maternal and child health. She has experience in family and private philanthropy in the areas of grant making, strategy and mission development and program oversight. Laurie has previously served as the Operations Manager for a small non-profit Human Service Agency in Pontiac, MI, and has extensive consulting experience in operations, revenue cycle management, business process redesign and project management in the non-profit, acute care, senior care, medical device and manufacturing industries. Laurie has served on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Dyslexia Institute, participated in Leadership Oakland LOXXII, and was a Girl Scout Leader for six years.  She has a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University.

Event Details: 

6:00pm Doors open for networking, hors d'oeuvres and holiday market

7:00pm Keynote will begin, followed by the panel discussion

8:00pm Dessert and additional networking time following panel
