Junior League of Ann Arbor

Our Mission - The Junior League of Ann Arbor, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

Done In A Day

In addition to our “signature projects”, the Junior League of Ann Arbor selects many community projects each year to support with volunteer hours and grants. These efforts are both large and small,  providing short-term volunteer assistance to over 28 non-profit organizations in need during the year.   To request volunteers to assist your organization, please click here.  For general Done In A Day questions, please contact the DIAD committee.

The JLAA’s DIAD projects and partnerships from 2009-10 include:

Strong Moms Strong Girls, a collaborative effort between the University Center for the Child and Family and the Junior League of Ann Arbor that is committed to creating healthy relationships between girls and the important adults in their lives, gave league members the opportunity to serve as community presenters, provide food for the sessions and participate in book clubs on relevant topics.

Junior League of Ann Arbor members manned the table and sold pottery for SOS Community Services' Empty Bowls program at the three-day Ypsilanti Heritage Festival. League members also provided books for the SOS children's book and activity area and helped entertain the children during food distribution to their families. SOS serves homeless families and children and others in crisis in Washtenaw County.

Junior League of Ann Arbor members were able to share their career and college experiences at monthly meetings of Girls Group, which helps develop self-sufficiency in teenage girls in the Ann Arbor area from high-risk, disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Junior League of Ann Arbor played a leading role in the creation of Ann Arbor’s Ronald McDonald House, whose mission is “to provide families of children experiencing a serious illness or injury requiring hospitalization or treatment on an outpatient basis, a “home away from home” that assists in alleviating the families’ emotional and financial stress”.  Members of the League continue to support the Ann Arbor Ronald McDonald House by providing a home-cooked meal once a month.

Junior League of Ann Arbor volunteers delivered meals through Motor Meals of Ann Arbor to “the frail, elderly, and disabled of the Ann Arbor area so that they may remain in their homes with dignity”.

Junior League of Ann Arbor volunteers donated sugar cookies, cookie-decorating products and their time at Perry Nursery School's annual cookie-decorating party for students and parents.

Members provided desserts for the Gimme Shelter Fundraiser for Alpha House.  This event is the primary fundraiser for the Alpha House Homeless Shelter (a.k.a. Interfaith Hospitality Network), raising approximately $100,000 to support their services.  Alpha House serves homeless families by providing food and shelter and a customized recovery plan to help families get back on track.  Over 90% of families that move through Alpha House are placed into permanent housing when they leave.

JLAA supported the SafeHouse Center in their efforts to raise the visibility of domestic violence awareness month.  Members volunteered during their Take Back the Night vigil held on the diag at University of Michigan.  The SafeHouse Center is dedicated to ending domestic violence and sexual assault in Washtenaw County.  Programs include counseling, court accompaniment, information and referrals, emergency shelter and advocacy.
